I'm with Stan on this one.
I won't say anything unless I'm provoked, though.

I'm going to assume you agree with his blasphemy, not that I'm a wuss.

It was the blasphemy.
Here's the thing. Back when I first discovered the game, it was the best thing ever. For me, that was really because of its battle system. I was expecting a turn-based one, but instead the game had a battle system that seemed to blend action with traditional RPG elements (random battles, going into a plain for battles, etc). That was in 2004. Ever since I played the others, Symphonia seems mediocre compared to the other Tales games. I'm not saying it's bad, just not as good as it used to be.
The one thing that irks me the most is the fanbase which, unsurprisingly, came from the BBS. Everyone obsessed over the game. Half of the people there weren't even gamers to begin with. I remember making threads about why they played Symphonia for the first time, and they always said it was because of the anime cover. Back then, I was that one guy who had played Champions of Norrath the few months before, and saw an ad that mentioned "full customization growth", which I thought meat you got to make your own character. To make matters worse, after I had played a few of the other games, a lot of the people there refused to give the others a try. If they did, they would say it was "okay" but not as good as Symphonia. I simply don't understand that. The dialogue in Symphonia sucks, for one thing, and the game tried too hard to have a billion plot twists. Those same people played Symphonia over and over again. It's painfully obvious that they were starved for more Tales. When you see a good thing, don't you want more of it, instead of the same part you had before? That's the way I felt, which is why I play the Tales games.

Where is your loyalty to the game that brought us all together?! You should stick to Symphonia and Symphonia alone! Going around like you do, and seeing other Tales... it's despicable! You should be ashamed of yourself! Tales of Symphonia was and always will be the greatest game ever created! When you see a good thing, don't you want more of the same? What better way than going through it over and over again, like a cow chewing its cud?
... Okay, I can't keep a straight face while I say that. I love ToS, but saying stuff like that is ridiculous. That said, I confess that I myself have not expanded into most of the other Tales games. Not counting the sequel, the only other Tales game I've played was Vesperia. In my case, I was already a gamer, though I was drawn in by the anime cover, I'll admit. The problem I have is that I really don't get out much. I probably would never have tried out Vesperia if not for the fact that I was out with my friend looking for games to rent and almost nothing looked good, but I knew I could count on Tales. So yeah, it's not that I'm unwilling to play the other Tales games, but rather that Tales isn't enough to get me out of the house. (It takes a LOT to get me out. Recluse to the extreme, I am.)
In any case, I haven't had enough Tales experience to determine whether ToS is overrated or not. Even though I suspect that to be the case, I do know that ToS will always have a place in my heart. That about sums up my feelings on this matter.

Right. Some people (namely you, cutepresea, and myself) have moved on to the others. I probably should have mentioned that.

as 'overrated' as it might be my brother and I still hold it in high, high regard. He's played through Phantasia... didn't like it that much. We've played through Abyss, I love it to death, but still, it doesn't top ToS, IMHO! My brother's played Vesperia too, he loves that! But still... He and I both agree, that even though it might not be the 'greatest' game out there.. it's still the best in terms of "it's the first game we've ever played- tales related, so there's an inSANE amount of loyalty there" Lol

You should join the podcast, and we should have a ToS topic to end all ToS topics.

The social perception at its time perceived the Gamecube to not have many RPGs. Symphonia attracted a lot of Nintendo fans who were RPG fans.

That's what I have heard. The people on the TSF said that a lot.
