Okay, so, as an extra credit assignment for my Sociology class, I had to sit down and watch this Dutch(or atleast I think it's Dutch?) film called North Sea Texas. Or as I like to call it, Everyone Is A Slut. Why? Well, because the entire film is a cycle of lust between just about everybody.
The movie is about a boy named Pim, who is different from those around him. He's quiet, keeps to himself, likes to draw on drink coasters, and dreams of one day being the Beauty Queen that his bitch of a mother was in years past.
However, his life takes a bit of a turn when he falls in love with a friend of his named Gino. And they start fucking like jackrabbits.
No, seriously. They do it like five times in the span of less than a half hour.
What really gets me about the whole thing though is that the message is confusing.
If the film even has a message, then it's really muddled and poorly written. If it doesn't, then it introduces needless symbolism to try and be more than what it is.
Not to mention, while the actors are all good at body language, the characters themselves are written... weird. Like I said earlier, just about everyone has the hots for everyone else(no joke, they do). Which makes everyone a cheater if nothing else.
And even ignoring that, most of the cast is just plain unlikable. Gino ends up being a cheating douchebag, Pim has no personality unless it comes to Gino or the guy who's basically his stepfather(and who it's hinted Pim has a thing for, ew), infact the only sympathetic character is Gino's' mother, who's visibly mentally and physically suffering.
Plus there's alot of foreshadowing and subplots that go absolutely nowhere. For instance, they make a big deal out of this knife that Pim "acquires" as as present from Gino, and then the whole thing is just kinda dropped after awhile with it never being brought up again. Well okay then.
Considering that Gino and Pim get back together by the end(and of course, elope), then I guess the lesson we can learn from this is that it's okay if your significant other is an asshole and does nothing but take advantage of you; They'll come around.
I'll give the movie this though, the cinematography itself was pretty nice. It helped make the movie seem less slow-paced than it actually was.
Overall, a 3/6. The whole experience is kinda just whatever.
