The day had finally come. Zacarias looked through his deck again, making sure that all of his cards were there. He was very proud of his deck, especially since it had held its own against many stronger opponents. Zac put the deck in his backpack with the rest of his collection.
After a quick breakfast, he ran out his door towards his destination. Today was the day that teens from all around were able to register for the East Duel Academy. The center was at the edge of town and, well, at this rate the boy was bound to be late.
As he ran, the kid noticed that the streets were oddly empty at this time of day. Well whatever; It'd just make getting around all the easier. Eventually he'd get there, and would just barely make it too. Just how did these registry-type deals go anyway?

The alarm clock went off, beeping loudly. Not like she had gotten any sleep last night anyway. Kara sprung out of bed, hitting the off switch, getting dressed and grabbing her already packed backpack. She darted downstairs, and into the kitchen, where her father was busying himself at the stove. "Morning," he said over his shoulder. "What are you hungry for?" "I'm just going to have toast, I think," she replied, taking the bread down from the cupboard. She felt a tug at her shirt from behind. She turned, and one of her younger sister was standing there, bleary eyed, her blonde hair tufty and looking like a halo around her face. She was clutching a Duel Monster card in one of her hands. "Hey, I've got a present for you... it's my favorite card..." she held out the card to her, and Kara took it. "Sonic Duck?" Kara asked, taking it. "But I run a water-" "Just take it, she's going to miss you, you know," Her father told her sternly. Kara took the card, patting the child on the head, and she smiled up at her. Her toast popped, and she grabbed it, heading for the door. "Good luck," Her father called after her. "Bring me back a toy!" Her sister added. Kara rolled her eyes good naturedly. She got to the empty streets, then headed towards the academy. She didnt really notice how empty they were, a spring in her step as she walked down the sidewalk. She went into the front gates, looking around impressed. She had heard that students got whole houses to themselves... and that would be great compared to the small and cramped apartment she shared with her father and four siblings. She was going to school to do what she loved, and she'd be living the high life while she was here. She wanted to leap in excitement.

Today seemed like a normal day. Rye Frecker fell asleep in class, and didn't wake up until lunch. Of course, to him, that means he's allowed to leave, so he did. The only problem with today was that he missed a major test that counted for half of his grade. Granted, Rye was already failing, but this time, he was failing even harder. Had he been awake, and had he studied enough, Rye could have passed the test, which would have raised his grade enough for him to complete a few assignments and eventually pass the class. However, he wasn't awake, and he didn't study. Basically, Rye wasn't going to pass. Frustrated, he left the class room and headed for home. "Jeez, what a pain!" Rye mumbled to himself. "I guess I should drop out and work at a game shop or something.." Rye continued walking home, but suddenly he felt a slight push for behind. "E-excuse me!" said a youthful voice. Although the voice had apologized, Rye wasn't pleased. "Ugh!! Did you just.. tell me to move?!" Rye turned around to confront the one who offended him. The voice seemed to have come from a nerdy boy with a strange gadget attached to his arm. "I-I'm sorry!" said the boy, terrified. "That's not good enough, you loser!" Rye yelled, throwing a punch. the boy was knocked to the ground, then Rye grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against a wall. To finish off his prey, Rye sucker punch the boy. "Never bump into me again! Now, get outta here." Rye commanded. "Besides, don't you have somewhere to be? You look all snazzed up." Sensing that Rye was no longer a threat, the boy stood up to answer Rye. "I go to the Duelist Academy! This is my uniform, and this is my duel disk!" said the boy proudly. "Duelist Academy? What's that?" asked Rye. "It's a school for people who like to play Duel Monsters! Going there counts as a regular high school!" the boy explained, attempting to convince Rye to enroll. "Duel Monsters? You mean that stupid card game that kids play? Sounds dumb." Rye replied. "Still, if going to that school counts as going to high school, I can graduate easy! Okay!" Rye thought. His mind was set. Rye walked off happily to sign up for the academy. "See you later!" Rye said to the boy. The boy smiled. He knew he would see Rye again, because Rye was thinking out loud.

Kage awakes in his five star hotel room and crawls out of bed. After putting on his duel disk with cards he walks outside his room and calmly exits the build (without paying for the room). Covering his eyes when he gets outside (because its too bright) he starts heading in the direction he assumes is the right way. Ready to get into the last dueling school left in the country. He strikes an epic pose and thinks to himself "alright Kage this is it time too prove you ARE the best that you ARE the king that yo" but before he can finish his thought the manager man from the hotel runs out and shouts "HAY THAT KID DIDN'T PAY FOR HIS ROOM!!". Without a second thought Kage books it out of there.

The seconds ticked away, closer and closer to the time of arrival. It was that time again, time for responsibility of watching after children playing card games. Captain Jack Hark, the newly appointed head of Slifer Red. As he waited he sat thinking about why he became the head of slifer red of all dorms. The clock struck and Capt. Jack put out his cigar.
"Time to meet the Idiots."

Winter couldn't help but scoff at the notion. "Idiots? That's a rather nice way of putting it. Half the applicants don't even know the rules..." Not that griping changed anything. He still made his way over to the stadium and prepared for the rush of would-be applicants.

As all the students walk up to the front steps, second and third year students guided them to the auditorium for orientation. When all the first years took their seats Captain Jack walked up to the podium in the middles of the stage. "Good Morning students" he said in a stern voice "I am Captain Jack Hark head of Slifer Red. Regrettably i have to explain to you the rules of this academy. Captain Jack steps away from the microphone for a second and takes a cigar out of his coat and lights it. "First rule is, there is to be no smoking or drinking on this campus. Second rule, no fighting, you have a problem with someone? settle it over a children's card game. Finally the third rule, if you want to complain, go to Winters...i don't want to hear it. I think that's it for me. Here is Winters who is going to ramble on about something you need to know so listen up." Captain Jack looked at Winters and then walked back to his seat on the stage.

...Why did you bother putting your last cigar out?
"...Well, you've heard the general rules from my coleague, but I'll make one thing very clear. The teachers have the last say in everything. No exceptions. If you can't accept that, leave now."
Surprisingly, not a single person rose to leave.
"Now then, you'll all be taking a written test to assess just where you'll be placed, if you get in at all." And on cue, an assistant began handing out the papers, pencils, erasers, and just about everything a person could conceivably need. "There will be no cheating, talking, or leaving during this exam. Are we clear?" Not a single word. "...From your silence, I'm assuming you all understand. Begin."

As time passed, Zacarias was busy wracking his brain, but to no avail. Afterall, just what in the world were you supposed to put in the line next to 'Name:' anyway? Desperate for answers, the boy quickly scanned the room before slowly leaning over to another teen next to him and whispering. "Hey, what's the answer to number one?"

It was Ryo. "Quiet! I'm not going to help you cheat!" Not that he'd figured it out either. Why did they have to start the test off with the hardest question!?

Rulings... technicalities... the history of duel monsters... How the hell was she supposed to know? She came here to play the game. The duel disks were programmed to take care of little technicalities and such themselves anyway. Why did she need to know that? She sped through the test anyway. No need in worrying about the small stuff. If she got it wrong, she'd get it wrong. Worrying wouldn't help any. She looked around as she got to the end. Uh-oh. She was the first person done. That wasn't good. She flipped through the test, seeing if she could expand her answers, double checking the multiple choice. She shrugged, leaning back in her seat. All that she could do now was wait, and hope she wasn't kicked out. She looked out the window, her eyes unfocusing as she let her mind drift.

Some more time passed, and Zacarias began to notice some students were starting to turn their papers in. Now was probably the time to get desperate. Thus, noticing the guy he'd bugged earlier was still working, Zac tapped him on the shoulder and started whispering again. "C'mon man I really need answers here."

Kara stood, handing her paper in at the desk, then sitting back down. "Hey," she whispered to the boy sitting in front of her. "You realize if you cheat, they'll kick you out, right? That would be ridiculous, seeing as we havent even gotten in yet."
